*Error*: cannot open for reading - Mac OS X use ulimit
Hi, I'm trying to make a very large IRAS mosaic. I get the error:
> *Error*: cannot open for reading ./IGA_img_p1196g184+02_b3_1.resamp.weight.fits

After reading the manual, I tried fixing this by increasing the max file limits. I am on Mac OS X 10.5, so "limit" is not a command. I used the following commands:

launchctl limit maxfiles 100000 unlimited
sudo sysctl -w kern.maxfiles 1000000 kern.maxfilesperproc 1000000

but received the same error.

I then tried:
ulimit -n 256000

and that worked. I was originally posting this as an error report, but now I understand that "ulimit" sets the number of files you can open (256000 is too many!), while the other commands set the max number you can set with ulimit. I hope this helps someone else.

Adam

RE: *Error*: cannot open for reading - Mac OS X use ulimit
Hi,
Just got a brand new mac pro with Snow Leopard and have the same problem.
Changing the ulimit to 25000, the kern.maxfilesperproc and kern.maxfiles does not help so far Sad
any suggestion?
thanks!

RE: *Error*: cannot open for reading - Mac OS X use ulimit
Hi Adam and Hervé,
how many images are involved in these stacks? In principle SWarp tries to open as few files as necessary for each output coadd line. Coadds of tens of thousands of images are routinely done with SWarp on Linux machines.

I found the solution. I was using Adam's instruction but ulimit is not recognized by the TCSH shell.
I had to use "limit" instead

Now it works!
