Trouble to install with fftw threads
Hi, It is grate to have a new version of SkyMaker.
I was trying to install it with threads but configure always claims that fftw3.h is not present.

<------- SNIP---------------->
checking fftw3.h usability... no
checking fftw3.h presence... no
checking for fftw3.h... no
I will compile using: cc -I/lu1/arm2arm/SOFTWARE/include/
I will link using: cc -all-static -L/lu1/arm2arm/SOFTWARE/lib/ -lm
<------- SNIP---------------->
But my fftw3 is installed with threads:

arm2arm@luise01 threads[0]$ ls /lu1/arm2arm/SOFTWARE/lib/
libfftw3.a libfftw3f.la libfftw3f_threads.la libfftw3_threads.a pkgconfig
libfftw3f.a libfftw3f_threads.a libfftw3.la libfftw3_threads.la
I was compiling with:
arm2arm@luise01 skymaker-3.1.0[0]$ LDFLAGS="-L/lu1/arm2arm/SOFTWARE/lib/ " CFLAGS="-I/lu1/arm2arm/SOFTWARE/include/" ./configure --prefix=/home/arm2arm/SOFTWARE

What is the problem?
Thank you beforehand.

Arman.

RE: Trouble to install with fftw threads
Try LDFLAGS="-L/lu1/arm2arm/SOFTWARE/lib/ -lfftw3".

If that doesn't work, please provide more info, i.e. the fftw3-check related contents in your config.log.

Best regards Jan

RE: Trouble to install with fftw threads
Thanks for replay,
I was playing with parameters finally I got the code with threads. Seems to me the tests for fftw are not correct they are not using CFLAGS, but they are using CPPFLAGS. Probably in acx_fftw.m4 somewhere we need to say that the CFLAGS should be used.
The command line what I used is:
CPPFLAGS='-I/lu1/arm2arm/SOFTWARE/include ' LDFLAGS='-L/lu1/arm2arm/SOFTWARE/lib -lfftw3_threads -lfftw3 -lm' ./configure --prefix=/lu1/arm2arm/SOFTWARE/ --enable-threads

RE: Trouble to install with fftw threads
I have a similar problem when compiling on RHEL3.

make[3]: Leaving directory `/usr/local/share/skymaker/src/fits'

then mv -f ".deps/alterimage.Tpo" ".deps/alterimage.Po"; else rm -f ".deps/alterimage.Tpo"; exit 1; fi

I can grep and find various instances of fftw, but cannot seem to find or make or download the appropriate library and/or set the correct configuration. Any clues?

RE: Trouble to install with fftw threads
You need to use CPPFLAGS and LDFLAGS to compile if you did not install libfftw in a standard location (sometimes I hate, that so many programs were more likely written by scientists instead of programmers, a programmer would probably have written a small script callable by the configure-script of other software to set these values).

You may also need to export these values into your current shell. (I assume configure ran just fine?)

RE: Trouble to install with fftw threads
I did several things.

First, my system didn't even have the fftw libs. Both the binary and source rpms (RHEL3) were obtained, and I re-ran the configure and make scripts. Same error: cannot find fftw3.h

I downloaded the fftw source itself and installed it manually -- this installed fftw3.h in the correct place, although the libs were put into /usr/local/lib.

I configured and maked again with and without CPPFLAGS and LDFLAGS.

When run with the flags, I used:

CPPFLAGS='/usr/local/include'
LDFLAGS='/usr/local/lib'

I ran configure with and without '--enable-threads'. With threads, the configure script breaks, so I tried it without. The errors occur when several skymaker subroutines, like psf.c look for fftw_* named routines like:

fftwf_malloc
fftwf_free
fftwf_plan_dft_2d
fftwf_destroy_plan

Does it seem that fftw is not correctly installed? I would have thought the rpms took care of everything?

Do you have older rpms? I am compiling from source because we have outdated libraries, with few plans of upgrades in place.

Cheers,
Ronak

RE: Trouble to install with fftw threads
First of all, /usr/local/lib and /usr/local/include should be in the default search paths for your compiler, but anyway, if it does not find the libs and headers, you have to set CPPFLAGS and LDFLAGS correctly.

They should read:
CPPFLAGS='-B/usr/local/'
LDFLAGS='-L/usr/local/lib'

Again: Does the configure script of skymaker run well?

Yes, the configure script runs without error. Here it is:

This file contains any messages produced by compilers while
running configure, to aid debugging if configure makes a mistake.

It was created by skymaker configure 3.1.0, which was
generated by GNU Autoconf 2.59. Invocation command line was

RE: Trouble to install with fftw threads
OK, configure finds fftw3.h. Thats fine. configure does not work with --enable-threads because you don't have -lfftw3_threads. Thats also fine, if you don't need threads.

Do you export the CPPFLAGS and LDFLAGS? Did you rerun configure with the exported FLAGS? if you just set the flags and the type make, it will most likely not work Wink

Regards Jan

RE: Trouble to install with fftw threads
Hi: I believe I exported everything correctly, reran ./configure and make. Make seems to still fail:
