Infrared data simulation - jmiguel - 12-13-2007 18:48

Hello everybody !!

could SkyMaker be used to simulation of (near) infrared images ? should it have any special configuration ?

Thanks all,
JM

Hi Jose,

sure, no problem! All you have to do is set the WAVELENGTH config parameter accordingly (actually the default is 0.8 micron, which is NIR already!). Do not hesitate to ask more instrument-specific questions.

Ok Emmanuel,
but is there any way of simulate dithered sequences of IR data ? The idea is to simulate IR data as comming from the a wide field infrared camera to make the shifting and align of the images (stacking).

Thanks again,
JM

Sure. All you need is a bit of scripting. You may for instance start by using the simple automatic star field catalog generation built in SkyMaker (controlled by the STARCOUNT_ZP and STARCOUNT_SLOPE config parameters. It will simulate the first exposure and write out a copy of the catalog (sky.list by default). Then you may rename the catalog (to, say, toto.list), add some randomly chosen decimal number to the coordinates in the catalog and give it as an argument to SkyMaker:
sky toto.list
and so on... You may also of course generate the stellar field catalogs by yourself, or start from galaxy fields simulated with Stuff. See the sample.list example file in the config/ subdirectory of the source archive.

Thanks very much Emmanuel. It sounds very well. I'll try it.
